If you do not live in one of the 50 states
Washington, D.C. and the U.S. territories are not states, so the answer to this question is different for applicants who live in them. USCIS prints the correct answer for each case directly in the official question list:
- If you live in Washington, D.C.

District of Columbia residents should answer that D.C. is not a state and does not have a capital.
- If you live in a U.S. territory

Residents of U.S. territories should name the capital of the territory.

Explanation
Every state has a capital city where the state government is located. For example, the capital of California is Sacramento, not Los Angeles. Look up your state's capital before your interview.
